Fishing and processing
Fishing and the fishing industry have a dominant position in Denmark’s biggest fishing port where we have a strong and complete value chain with all links from catching and landing over processing to sales and transport
Fishing and processing of fish have a long tradition and history at the Port of Skagen, and it is still the core of the Port of Skagen. Our fish terminal offers excellent landing facilities where the fresh fish is loaded into the groupage terminal, the fishing auction or directly into refrigerated lorries for further transport. Much of the landed fish is processed and refined at the many fish producers at the port to be sold and sent on to buyers all over Europe in one unbroken refrigerated chain.
The Port of Skagen is the biggest fishing port in Denmark measured in quantities as well as value. Over the last years, fish to a value of more than one billion Danish kroner has been landed in the Port of Skagen. Measured in value, the Port of Skagen holds a position in the top 10 amongst the largest fishing ports in Northern Europe.
The majority of the landings in the Port of Skagen is used for consumption and the pelagic industry. Over 125,000 tons of fishmeal and fish oil are exported to more than 60 countries. The catch of pelagic fish consists mainly of herring and mackerel where the herring accounts for more than 100,000 tons annually. This makes the Port of Skagen Northern Europe’s most important landing port for herring. At the same time, more than 200,000 tons of industrial fish is landed in the Port of Skagen annually.
We want to create the very best conditions for growth and development. Stage 3 of the expansion of the port increases the facilities of the port with almost 1,000 metres of new quay, increased water depth in the entrance and existing basins as well as 190,000 square metres of land area.
